SAMPLER SERVICES
Meet Ann
If you need an editor with exceptional
analytic and English-language skills, broad
knowledge of typesetting and document
production processes, and in-depth
knowledge of desktop publishing software,
you've come to the right place.
Using my 40 years of experience, I want to
help bring readability and consistency to your
nonfiction publications. Having written and
edited in the fields of high-tech, business,
science, and both conventional and
complementary medicine, I can bring an
exacting eye to most texts, ensuring that your
message speaks clearly to your intended
audience.
My specialty is biomedical editing, with
particular emphases on patient-centric
language and on creating clean tabular
material that makes even the most complex
of presentations highly readable. Over my
career, I have helped many ESL authors
present unique research to their
communities with the greatest possible
fluency. As a dedicated life-long learner, I’m
committed to observing how language
evolves and ensuring that form never gets in
the way of function.
It is my pleasure to help authors make the
greatest possible impact with their words.
Please explore my qualifications and sam-
ples, and then let me know how I can help
with your publication requirements.
Editing
I have been applying my skills — at the
copyediting, substantive editing, and
rewriting levels — for more than 40 years. My
work has spanned many sectors: business,
high-tech, consumer goods, public service,
defence establishment, and manufacturing.
However, for the last 20 years, my specialty
has been copyediting in the scientific and
biomedical sectors, specifically:
•
For Multimed Inc.: Current Oncology
(originally quarterly, and then every
second month, 1999–2020), Advances in
Peritoneal Dialysis (annual, 1999–2018),
Peritoneal Dialysis International (every
second month, 2007–2014),
International Journal of Therapeutic
Massage and Bodywork (quarterly,
2008–2010), Journal of Applied Clinical
Medical Physics (quarterly, 2007–2008),
Hemodialysis International (quarterly,
occasional), and PD News (occasional).
•
For the Pacific Seabird Group: Marine
Ornithology (twice-annual scholarly re-
search journal, 2004–2010)
Desktop
Publishing
Computerized typesetting and desktop
publishing (DTP) have been at the core of my
entire career. If you need professional design,
I’m happy to refer you to collegues who are
specialists. However, if you are in need of
something smaller at lower cost — an
attractive résumé layout, a professional-
looking multi-page report, a simple single-
page flyer, or a bi- or tri-fold pamphlet — I
can create the necessary layout and provide
you with a PDF (portable document format)
file that can be output on any home printer
or given to a commercial print shop for
reproduction.
Some of my DTP work includes these
projects:
•
Formatting a large conference handbook
for The Conference Board of Canada
•
Formatting the mandatory twice-annual
Parliamentary reports for Status of
Women Canada, 2005–2014
•
Formatting tri-fold pamphlets of seasonal
seminar offerings for the National Capital
Region branch of the Editors’ Association
of Canada (now Editors Canada)
•
Formatting complex double tri-fold
pamplets for the Westport and Rideau
Lakes Doors Open events
•
Formatting and printing a one-page flyer
for the Smiths Falls Duplicate Bridge
Club’s 2019 sectional tournament
Career
After university graduation, and a series of
entry-level positions as diverse as restaurant
and banquet server, receptionist for a
veterinary practice, front-of-house manager
for the experimental second stage of a
nationally known theatre, telephone operator
and front desk clerk for a Canada-wide hotel
chain, and credit interviewer for a large
furniture store, I found my niche in the areas
of computerized typesetting and document
preparation and editing.
Since 1998
